In the middle of the twentieth century, a new garden group of roses was bred - grandiflora. But in most European countries, they did not want to recognize it as a separate group, and all newly developed species were still considered representatives of the floribunda group. Topic of this article: rose of grandiflora, what is it.

general information

In 1954, Walter Lammerts bred a new group of roses by crossing the Charlotte Amstrong hybrid tea rose with the Floribunda, Floradora. The name of the bred variety was given by Elizabeth Queen. It is named after Queen Elizabeth. It differed significantly from its relatives in the size of its flowers and was named Grandiflora (translated as large-flowered). It is Elizabeth Queen who is considered to be the founder of this group. But it should be noted that a little earlier, another representative of this group was received - Carrousel (Carousel). But since his qualities were slightly worse than Elizabeth, he did not receive such recognition.

In the shape of the buds and their size, grandiflora is more similar to hybrid tea roses, but in terms of flowering duration and its abundance, grandiflora is closer to floribunda. But on top of that, the newly created hybrid is distinguished by excellent frost resistance, vigor and tall plants.

Note! The height of the bush of this group reaches 2 meters. The bush is very healthy, powerful and has good immunity to fungal diseases. Collected in loose inflorescences, the buds outwardly bear more resemblance to hybrid tea roses.

Roses of the grandiflora group bloom from the second decade of June to the end of September. The flowering is very abundant. Flowers are most often white pink, as well as with all shades of red. These flowers are mostly double, in one bud there are up to 40 petals, in diameter it can be up to 10 - 15 centimeters. Many gardeners regret to note the lack of smell in many species of this group.

Grandiflora roses are planted in group plantings, for their high growth, they are often placed in the background. They can be used as a hedge and as a separate specimen. They are also very good for cutting.

Some varieties have standard types:

  • Queen Elizabeth. This is a powerful shrub about one meter high, all covered with corrugated, goblet, double buds. The diameter of the flower reaches 10-12 cm, and it consists of 35-40 petals, at first it has the shape of a glass, and later takes a flat-bowl shape. In brushes there are from 3 to 15 pieces. The flowers have a delicate aroma. Flowering occurs throughout the summer. These beauties are not afraid of rain or heat, their shape and appearance are perfectly preserved. Queen Elizabeth is very resistant to diseases such as powdery mildew and black spot, but preventive treatment still needs to be done.
  • Sonia Meilland. In 1974, another type of roses with large flowers was bred at the Meilland firm. The bush consists of tough and erect shoots, about a meter high. Against the background of the dark green foliage, there were multi-petal flowers of a pink-coral hue. Flowers with a diameter of 10-11 cm, especially beautiful are not fully blossomed, but only half. These flowers are attractive for their original delicate fruity aroma. The name of this beauty was given in honor of Meiyan's daughter - Sonia Meilland. With proper care, the Meiland Grandiflora rose will delight its owner for a long time.
  • Gold Medal. This bush is slightly lower than the previous ones, its height is only 80 cm. Although the buds are just as large - 11 centimeters. The flowers, golden-yellow with orange edges, emit a pleasant delicate aroma, they are beautiful both unblown and fully opened, such gold medals justifying their name. These medals flaunt on the bush all summer and a good half of autumn. Of all diseases, this variety, like the rest of the descendants of hybrid tea species, is most susceptible to powdery mildew.

The most popular varieties of roses of the Grandiflora group

Samourai (Samurai)

Looking at this rose, the legendary film "Shogun" immediately comes to mind. It was bred by Marie-Louise Meilland in 1966. It was obtained by hybridization of the Independence variety with the Happiness hybrid tea. It turned out to be fiery red, with large flowers up to 12 centimeters in size, consisting of 20-25 petals. Very bright color, fading, becomes, as it were, burnt out with tan along the edges of the petals. Samourai (Samurai) is often affected by powdery mildew. This variety of Grandiflora has been awarded many medals and prizes.
