Hybrid tea varieties of roses were bred by French breeders at the end of the 19th century. The first variety of hybrid tea roses, officially recognized and considered the ancestor of this class of roses, is Le France or La France. It was bred by the breeder Jean-Baptiste André Guillot. The "parents" of this class of rose varieties were remontant and tea roses. The flower was so good that other breeders began to work on obtaining new hybrid varieties, and they were very successful in this. As a result of breeding work, a unique variety appeared - the Eastern Express rose. This is an exhibition flower, it has received high marks at international flower exhibitions and has won the ardent love of amateur gardeners.

A brief history of the creation of the Orient Express rose variety

The full exhibition name of this selection miracle is the Pullman Orient Express rose. It was bred by breeders in 2001 on the basis of the famous yellow-pink Gloria Dey rose, which was bred in the first half of the 20th century by the French florist and breeder F. Meilland. It was obtained as a separate independent variety on the eve of World War II under the code "3-35-40". This code was not chosen by chance:

  • number 3 means that this is the third combination;
  • the number 35 means that the combination was obtained in 1935;
  • the number 40 means that this is the fortieth seedling out of fifty planted seeds.

It was exported by cuttings to the USA. Moreover, they carried her by diplomatic mail, since the occupation of France was a foregone conclusion. All the years of the war she was cared for and cherished in the greenhouses of the United States, and at the first post-war UN assembly, the delegates of the founding countries received one flower each. So Gloria Day went all over the world, becoming a symbol of peaceful life on earth. And it was this legendary flower that was chosen as the basis for the development of a new variety - the Orient Express rose.

Ways of planting roses Pullman Orient Express

If agricultural techniques are followed when planting seedlings, then roses are well accepted and bloom in the first year of planting. For this you need:

  • Plant the seedlings in well-loosened soil. Before planting, it is advisable to dig up the site to a depth of 0.5 m.
  • Add sand and humus to the soil to improve air access to the roots, and at the same time to feed the plant.
  • Having dug a hole 0.5 m deep, be sure to put a drainage on the bottom, sprinkle it with soil and add a little nitrophosphate.
  • Sprinkle with wood ash on top to reduce the acidity of the soil. Add at least 1 cup of wood ash to each hole.
  • Make a small mound in the center of the hole from the ground.

It is better to plant a rose together:

  • Lower the seedling vertically into the hole so that the grafting site is 3-4 cm below ground level. One person holds the seedling, and the other gently places the roots on a mound so that they do not get confused.
  • Then the roots are covered with earth, the soil is compacted.

Then the hole should be watered, when the earth settles, you can add some soil, and on top of it, grind it with sawdust.

Important! Water for watering roses should be warm and settled.

During the growth period, a seedling requires constant watering and feeding, which is carried out 1 time in 3 weeks. For fertilization, mullein and nitrogen-phosphorus fertilizers are used. During the flowering period, fertilizing with potash fertilizers is required.

How formative pruning of bushes is carried out

If the rose is planted in spring, then the first pruning is done in the fall. And next year, pruning can and should be done in spring and summer. It is necessary to give the bush a beautiful shape and for its recovery. Because in the process of pruning, all dried and unhealthy shoots are cut off. Thanks to this, the bush always looks well-groomed and healthy. How to properly trim:

  • In the fall, before the roses are sheltered for the winter, all herbaceous unripe shoots are necessarily cut off, because they will not survive the winter and will die, and while the rose is opened in the spring, they can rot, harming the entire bush.
  • All other shoots are cut in autumn to a length of 40-50 cm.
  • Spring pruning is necessary in order to reorganize the bush, freeing it from the shoots that have rotted during the winter. Pruning begins only after the appearance of the buds. Adult plants are pruned to 3 buds, and young plants are pruned only for 1 bud.
  • Summer pruning is needed for the decorative look of the bush. So that the bush has a beautiful shape and does not look sloppy. All wilted flowers are immediately removed from the bush so that parasites do not grow in them.

Pest and disease control

The problem is that Orient Express rose is loved not only by people, but also by parasites. A strong fragrant smell during flowering attracts not only bees to the garden, but also a lot of pests that bring enormous harm to the plant. In addition, there are a number of diseases of rose bushes that you need to know about in order to recognize the enemy in time and begin to fight against him before the bush is killed. So, the most common diseases:

  • Powdery mildew appears on the leaves of roses in the form of a white bloom. The Vostochny Express variety is resistant to this disease, but for prevention purposes, it is necessary to sprinkle ash around the bush with ash in spring and autumn.If the infection does occur, then the rose should be sprayed with topaz. This is done according to the attached instructions for use.
  • Black spot is a disease in which black spots appear on the leaves or shoots. At the first sign of the appearance of these spots, these shoots should be cut off and burned.
  • Chlorosis is a rose disease caused by a lack of fertilizer or waterlogged roots. It manifests itself in the form of pallor of rose leaves, turning into marbling. In this case, it is recommended to feed the plant by applying dry organic fertilizers under the bush around the central trunk.

Of the pests that can cause real harm to the rose, it should be distinguished:

  • Rose aphid - first covers the leaves from the back with a sticky bloom, where aphid colonies settle, sucking the juice from the plant. You can fight it only by spraying with special preparations with an interval of 2-3 weeks.
  • Rose leafworm - twists rose leaves into flagella. In the early stages, it can be fought by carving the affected shoots and burning them. With extensive lesions, spraying with karbofos is necessary.
