Spathiphyllum is an indoor flower, the name of which, translated from Greek, means a veil ("spata") and a leaf ("phillum").

In the people, it can simply be called Women's happiness, or Women's joy. There is a sign that this flower is able to bring happiness to a woman. If a girl is unmarried, then she will definitely meet her beloved, if she is already married, then the plant will bring understanding and family well-being to the house, and a flower will give a woman who has no children.

Believing in the special purpose of the flower, in South America, the Indians even transferred their rituals to the period of spathiphyllum flowering.

The native land of the plant is the tropical forests of Asia and America. The flower is found in Brazil, Venezuela, Trinidad, Colombia and the Philippines.

It was first discovered in the 1870s by the German botanist H. Wallis, who was on a scientific expedition in the jungles of Colombia and Ecuador.

Features of appearance

Spathiphyllum leaves are oval or lanceolate and grow directly from the ground since the plant lacks a stem. The inflorescence is an ear on a long stalk, from which a veil (white flower) forms over time. The height of a plant ranges from 15 cm to 1 m, it all depends on its type.

If you properly take care of Women's happiness, then it will bloom for several months in the spring, as well as in the autumn-winter period.

Attention! The name "specificium", which is found in some sources, is incorrect!

Characteristics of crop varieties

Dozens of species of these flowers are known today.

The most common among them are:

  • Spaliphyllum Spoon-shaped. It gets its name from the shape of the flower, which truly resembles a spoon. Its height reaches 1 m. Also, the plant has beautiful large leaves, up to 40 cm in size. When the cover is ripe, its color changes from white to green.

  • Spathiphyllum Domino differs from other species in its variegated color. Many white strokes are scattered across its foliage.
  • Spathiphyllum Picasso seems to be painted by a real artist. Moreover, not only the leaves have large white spots. The perianth is also green-white in color and has a pointed tip that makes it truly unique.

Important! In nature, there is still such a flower as the red "anthurium". Many also call it spathiphyllum, but this is not at all the case. According to legends, anthurium is not a woman's, but a man's happiness. Why is this a different flower? Because spathiphyllum is only white.

Plant propagation

Best of all, female flowers reproduce by dividing the bush. To do this, in the spring, the shoots are separated from the mother plant and planted in separate pots.

At the bottom of the flowerpot, you need to put a drainage about 2.5 cm thick. As for the soil, it should be as close as possible to that in which the flower is in natural conditions. Therefore, it is better to cook it yourself.

For this you need to take:

  • peat (3 parts);
  • garden soil (2 parts);
  • substrate for orchids (3 parts).

Important! Women's joy is a flower that can live in other soil. The main thing is that it is loose, otherwise there will be stagnation of water and the roots can rot.

The plant does not like direct sunlight, but a lack of light will lead to the fact that it stops blooming or gives a barren flower, and the leaves become small. Therefore, it is better to put it on the windows that face the north side.

Some growers try to grow Women's Happiness from seeds, but this is a rather difficult method, since they very rarely germinate. In addition, only freshly harvested crops need to be planted. In addition, experienced flower lovers say that even if the seeds germinate, the flowers will still be weak.

Diseases and pests

Spathiphyllum can become a victim of various pests that are not only capable of destroying a flower, but also provoke the development of no less dangerous diseases. The main ones are:

  • A sooty fungus that can appear on the upper side of leaves. When infected, the flower begins to turn black and wither. The affected plant becomes weakened as the fungus interferes with photosynthesis. Therefore, it urgently needs to be treated - a simple soap solution will help get rid of the problem.
  • The scale insect feeds on plant sap. Due to this pest, the leaves of Women's happiness also become covered with dark spots, dry out and turn yellow. If left untreated, the plant may even die. To prevent this from happening, experienced flower growers recommend using a soap-tobacco solution, to which you need to add a little alcohol.
  • Mealybug is a pest that looks like very small pieces of cotton wool. It also feeds on plant sap, which causes them to dry out. If he did not manage to form a colony, then it will be enough to wipe the plant with alcohol, otherwise you should use Aktellik.
  • The spider mite is the most dangerous pest. After all, if it is not destroyed in time, then the flower will definitely die. It is quite easy to understand that Feminine happiness is eaten by a tick, since it is betrayed by the presence of a small cobweb on the leaves. Actellik and Aktara are used to destroy this parasite.

Plant care rules

Inexperienced lovers of beautiful plants should definitely figure out how to care for the female flower spathiphyllum.

If the Female Flower was purchased in a store in a plastic pot, then after 2 weeks it needs to be transplanted. However, in general, plants that are too young do not need replanting. Only when the flower turns 5 years old and its roots are visible from the pot, then it is transplanted into a new container.

It should be remembered that too large a flowerpot is also not suitable for Women's happiness, since the roots will not have time to fill the pot, the soil in it will turn sour. Therefore, each subsequent flowerpot should not be much larger than the one in which the flower grew before.

Attention! If the height of the spathiphyllum does not exceed 40 cm, then the diameter of the flower pot should not be more than 20 cm.

When transplanting this plant into a new container, it is necessary to remove all processes from it. Before pulling out a flower, it is well watered and pulled out of a pot with an earthen lump. The soil is well tamped so that there are no voids anywhere, and lightly watered. After that, the plant is only sprayed for the first 4 days.

In the evening, when it gets dark, Feminine happiness can be fed with Epin, so that the rooting process is more successful.

From March to September, the plant needs feeding. It is applied once every 2 or 3 weeks. For this, mineral fertilizers are well suited, which are dissolved in water at the rate of 1.5 g per 1 liter of water.

Important! If the flower fades, the dried residues should be cut off, as they absorb a lot of moisture.

In general, Spathiphyllum is a picky house flower. If he is provided with proper care, and for this you only need desire and a light hand, then he will become a real decoration of any home.
