Almost all types of tomatoes require special care and climatic conditions. However, the Fat Jack tomato is different from many other types of tomato. This variety can be grown even in the northern regions of Russia, it is unpretentious and quite fruitful.

The history of the creation of the variety

Fat Jack is a young tomato variety that was born in 2014. This type of fruit plant was bred by Russian breeders taking into account the climatic conditions of Russia. The variety does not require any special care, and, regardless of this, gives a good harvest.

Characteristics of Tomato Fat Jack

Tomato Fat Jack characteristics and description of the variety:

  1. General characteristics of the type of tomato. The variety belongs to the group of early ripening tomatoes. The berries fully ripen after 100-105 days after planting, but this period may increase or decrease, since the time of planting and the region affects the ripening period of the tomato. This species is frost-hardy, so Fat Jack tomatoes can be grown even in the northern regions. The tomato variety is not resistant to diseases, therefore it is recommended to carry out processing from time to time. The stems of the plant are low, their length does not exceed 50 cm, the bushes are also not very branched. One bush should have no more than 5 stems, the rest are recommended to be removed, as they reduce the yield of the plant. It is also recommended to remove the lower leaves. This is necessary to increase the air flow and provide aeration of the soil. The leaves of the plant are no different from the leaves of other types of tomatoes.
  2. Description of tomato fruits. Tomato fruits begin to form 100 days after planting. The fruits are slightly flat in shape. Ripe fruits have a deep red color, very rarely the fruit has a dark pink color. On average, one tomato weighs 250 grams, some fruits reach a weight of 350 grams. More than 8 kg of fruit can be harvested from a bush. Ripe vegetables are strong enough that they do not deteriorate during transportation and can be stored for a long time. The pulp of a ripe berry is quite juicy, but not watery. This variety is distinguished by its taste, in addition, the ripe fruits are very fragrant and have a sweetish taste. Due to the aroma and taste of this type, it is mainly used in the manufacture of pastes, adjika and tomato juice. It is also ideal for making fresh salads and pickles, as it has a small amount of seeds.

Features of plant care

Due to climatic conditions, it is recommended to plant seeds in a greenhouse or under a film, thus it will be possible to avoid freezing of seedlings, since it is at this time that the plants are especially vulnerable.

Important! You can plant seeds in mid-spring. Seed germination is 98%, but it is still recommended to hold the seeds in a solution of potassium permanganate (2%) before planting.

After the weather settles and the ground warms up (mid or late May), you can plant seedlings in open ground. It is recommended to plant 4 sprouts per 1 sq. m. Before planting the plant, it is recommended to soften and fertilize the soil: in each hole, you can pour eggshell powder or purchase special fertilizers. The land will need to be fed several more times over the entire period.Also, several times during the entire season it will be necessary to soften the soil and mulch it. Watering is done as needed. Basically, watering is required when the topsoil dries out. It is undesirable to flood the plant too much, as this can lead to rotting.

Moderate watering

Note! After planting seedlings, it is recommended to immediately carry out treatment against pests and various diseases; for the entire flowering period, it is necessary to carry out processing 2-3 more times. It is also important to get rid of the weedy grass around the tomato in time. Often, weeds become the cause of tomato infection with various diseases. Since the bushes of the plant are low and slightly branched, they do not need to be tied up.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

In addition to unpretentiousness and taste, Fat Jack also has the following advantages:

  1. Planting options: both in greenhouses and in open ground;
  2. The possibility of planting by a seedless method;
  3. High germination rate. 98% of the planted seeds germinate;
  4. Suitable for the northern regions, as the species is quite resistant to a sharp change in weather conditions;
  5. High productivity. From one bush, you can collect about 8 kg of berries, while from some varieties (Dubrava, Verlioka, Explosion) you can collect no more than 5 kg;
  6. Low stems and non-branched bushes. On average, there are 4-5 stems in one bush, very rarely there are more of them, so you do not need to constantly carry out the pinching procedure. The bushes are not tall, but strong, so they do not need to be strengthened and tied up;
  7. The resistance of ripe tomatoes to transportation and the possibility of long-term storage;
  8. Absence of barren flowers, even in bad weather conditions;
  9. Large berries. One berry can weigh 320 grams. The fruits of most types of tomatoes (Dubrava, Golden Jubilee, Nastenka, Klusha) do not weigh more than 200 grams;
  10. High ripening rate.
