Most people love apples. For this reason, there is nothing surprising in the fact that apple trees can be found in almost all Russian summer cottages. Recently, columnar varieties of culture have become more and more in demand from gardeners. For example, the columnar apple tree Triumph, which will be discussed below.

History of creation

Triumph is a kind of apple tree, which is the result of the work of the STISP employees. The apple variety was entered in the State Register of the Russian Federation in 2015 as a high-yielding variety with an average ripening period. Not too experienced gardeners often confuse Triumph with other varieties of dwarf and semi-dwarf columnar apple trees. In order to avoid such a mistake, it is strongly recommended that you familiarize yourself with the varietal characteristics of the crop in more detail.

Characteristics of the variety

According to the description of the variety, the tree of the columnar apple tree Triumph is distinguished by its rather modest and compact sizes. It grows up to 1.5-2 meters. The growth rate of the variety is average, the crown also differs in a not too high indicator of density.

The shoots located along the trunk are rather thick, round and upright. The leaf plates are dark green, slightly elongated and pointed at the ends. The leaves are smooth to the touch and look glossy.

Subject to cultivation techniques, the fruits grow medium in size. An apple can weigh from 100 to 150 g. In shape, the fruit most of all resemble a flattened ball. The skin of the fruit is thin and glossy, but firm. The color is bright, with a blush almost over the entire surface. The pulp of this varietal variety of apples is white, highly juicy and has a pronounced apple flavor. The fruit tastes honey-sweet, but a slight sourness is still present. To obtain fruits, an additional pollinator is not required for the apple tree - the variety is self-pollinated.

The main characteristic that the Triumph columnar apple tree has (and for which it is highly valued by gardeners) is its high resistance to diseases such as scab. The culture has a genetic immunity to this disease. Under a certain set of circumstances, the Triumph apple tree can get sick with other diseases. But such a probability is not too high - the plant can withstand many diseases.

Despite the fact that frost resistance is ranked among the varietal characteristics of Triumph, this variety is not entirely northern. And for the winter it should be insulated.

The ripening period of apples falls, depending on the region of planting, at the beginning or middle of September. It is at this time that apples reach technical maturity. On average, from one tree per season, you can get about 6 kilograms of fruit. With ideal care, it is quite possible to raise the indicated indicator to the level of 10 kilograms. In the case of planting the Triumph apple tree on an industrial scale, 80 to 100 kg are harvested from 1 hectare of area.

The shelf life of the harvest of this variety of apple trees is relatively low - only 2-3 months. (For comparison, some columnar varieties survive the whole winter and even capture part of the spring).

Features of agricultural technology

In order to successfully grow any columnar type of apple trees, including the Triumph variety, it is recommended to pay special attention to the choice of the site.Planting should be carried out in those parts of the garden area that are well lit by the sun, protected from the wind and have a not too high level of groundwater.

Important! At the time of planting the seedlings, the soil must have time to properly warm up. On cold ground, the plant will most likely not be able to take root.

Some gardeners, having planted fruit trees in the garden, do not particularly think about what kind of care they need, letting the process take its course. In the case of the Triumph variety, such a scheme of actions will not work. To get a good harvest, you will need to work hard during the growing season.

Watering

One of the main conditions for good care is regular and timely watering of apple plants. Water consumption per tree will be about 10 liters. Watering the crop will take about 2-3 times a week (in an overly dry summer - every day).

Saplings

Watering the crop begins at the budding stage and ends in August. The day after the procedure, it is strongly recommended to thoroughly loosen the soil in the area of the trunk circle. This should be done with special care, trying not to harm the root system of the apple tree located close to the surface.

Important! To retain moisture in the soil for a longer period of time, it is recommended to subject the trees to mulching with straw.

Top dressing

For the Triumph variety, fertilizing with microelements is optimal, which is carried out by spraying the foliage of apple trees. Many fertilizers have similar compositions. The most important thing is that the instructions for preparing the solution, placed by the manufacturer on the packaging, are followed one hundred percent. Fertilizing plants with nitrogen and organic fertilizers is allowed only until August, and potassium can be applied to the soil until the beginning of the harvest. An aqueous solution of cow dung with urea can be used as an organic fertilizer. With a similar composition, it is necessary to water apple trees at the rate of about 2 liters per 1 tree.

Pruning

Despite the fact that columnar apple trees do not give side shoots, you still need to cut them off. But this procedure will have some peculiarities. Sometimes, due to damage to the upper fruit point, two apical shoots can develop in parallel. This state of affairs leads to the asymmetry of the tree. It is recommended to remove the weaker shoot to avoid problems.

Preparing for winter

Despite the relative winter hardiness, if the air temperature in the cold season often drops below -10 degrees, the plants should be covered. It is best to use spruce branches or shavings as a covering material. It is better not to use straw, as it will inevitably attract the attention of rodents. Alternatively, the crop can be covered with snow.

Advantages and disadvantages

Apple trees Triumph have many positive words, but there are also some drawbacks.

The advantages of growing this culture include:

  • the possibility of obtaining large, beautiful and very tasty fruits in the fall;
  • compactness of trees;
  • excellent yield indicators;
  • early maturity;
  • high disease resistance.

As for the disadvantages, here one cannot fail to mention not the very good transportability (especially over long distances), low keeping rates and a short fruiting period (about 10 years). In addition, some gardeners complain that the cost of planting material of the Triumph variety is too high.

Despite the shortcomings, the variety can be classified as a promising apple tree species. Many gardeners, after considering various options, choose this particular variety and successfully grow it in their dachas and vegetable gardens. A novice gardener will also cope with the cultivation of an apple tree Triumph, especially if he is not too lazy to get acquainted with the peculiarities of caring for this columnar culture.
