The apple variety Zhelannoye was bred by scientists from the Research Institute of Selection of Fruit Crops. The emergence of this variety was the result of the work of N.G. Krasova, E.N. Sedova, Z.M. Serova. In 1999, the variety began to be tested in the Central Black Earth Region of Russia.

Description and characteristics of the variety

The apple tree Zhelannoye has the following description. It has a rounded crown. The main branches are located rarely, almost at right angles to the trunk. The bark is not rough and gray in color. The shoots of the tree are rounded in cross section, they are brown in color. The kidneys are small, conical in shape; they are pubescent, like shoots. The leaves of the trees of the variety are rather large, have a rounded shape; they are smooth to the touch, matte, and the plate itself is somewhat curved downward. At the edges, the sheet is fairly even. The petiole has a reddish-purple color; in thickness it is significant, pubescent. The flowers are saucer-shaped, close to flat, in shape. The bud is pale pink in different shades in different parts. Rounded petals. The stigma of the pistil is located just below the anther or at the same level with it.

The fruits are flattened, medium in size. The skin is smooth to the touch, shiny with a slight waxy coating. When harvested, the apples are green with a yellowish tinge. When the apples are fully ripe, they take on a more yellow color. When cut, you can see the snow-white pulp with small grains. They have a rich apple aroma. The fruits are attractive in appearance and also taste good, which allows them to be highly rated when sold.

Agrotechnics

Preparing the soil for planting

The optimal time for planting this variety of apple trees is the end of April or the beginning of May. However, a month before the tree is planted in the ground, the planting site must be properly prepared. For this you need:

  • Dig (within a month!) A hole, no more than 0.6 m deep, having a diameter not exceeding 1.2 meters.

Important! During planting, you should make sure that the holes are at a sufficient distance so that the trees do not interfere with each other later.

  • The top layer of earth, which was removed from the pit, should be mixed with organic fertilizers, in the role of which either humus, or rotted manure, or both, can be used.
  • A wooden stake is driven into the middle of the hole, which should protrude approximately half a meter above the ground.
  • The soil mixed with fertilizers is poured back into the pit.

Landing in the ground

Before you need to plant a tree directly into the ground, the seedling must be prepared. To do this, put its roots in a bucket of water for about 5 hours. Then it must be carefully lowered into the hole and positioned so that the seedling is on the south side relative to the peg, carefully and evenly distribute the roots and tie it to the stake with a non-rigid string. Next, you should carefully fill the roots with soils, while you need to make sure that the root collar remains above the ground. After that, you need to compact the soil a little.

After the apple tree has been planted, it is necessary to make a small roller around the tree so that further watering is more efficient, and the water falls exactly to the tree. After that, the seedling must be watered abundantly (you need to pour out about 2-3 buckets of water). The next 3 months after planting, you should water the apple tree once a week and make sure that the garter does not grow into the trunk. After 2 years from the moment of disembarkation, the stake can be removed.

Watering

The apple tree watering strategy should be chosen based on weather and climatic conditions. If there is a drought, the trees will have to be watered more often. If the weather is rainy, then you need to ensure that oxygen is easily supplied to the roots of the tree. To do this, you need to loosen the ground, you can also make holes in the ground, but care should be taken not to damage the roots. You can use a pitchfork, but to be sure it is better to step back half a meter from the tree trunk.

Top dressing of an apple tree

For the first 2 or 3 years after planting, the trees are not fed with fertilizers, as they have enough nutrients. After this time, you need to start to make additional feeding of the tree. To do this, at the end of April, you need to scatter a couple of buckets of manure or 500 g of carbamide around the tree. At the time of blooming, superphosphates, potassium sulfate solution, urea and some other fertilizers may be useful.

Important! It is recommended to water the tree well before and after fertilization.

When the apples are already poured, it is worth feeding the tree with nitrophoska solution or dry sodium humate. In the fall, you need to feed the trees with potassium sulfate or superphosphate; the way they are used depends on the weather: if it rains often and the soil moisture is high enough, then they should be applied dry, if not, then they should be mixed with water.

Preparing the tree for winter

Before preparing a tree for winter, it must first be cleaned of old and diseased bark. To cover up cracks and wounds in the tree, garden var is used. Then you need to spray the tree with a solution of ferrous sulfate, preparing it at the rate of 500 g per 10 liters of water. Then you need to mulch the trunk circles with humus and whitewash the trees: if the trees are already old - with lime, if not, then with chalk.

Apple pruning Desired

Since the branches of this variety grow quite rarely, in this part the tree does not require increased maintenance and intensive pruning. In any case, pruning should be done in the spring, before the sap has begun to move. In this case, one must not forget to process the trimming points with paint.

Pollinators

The Zhelannoye apple tree is planted close to other varieties that can play the role of a pollinator for it. The most suitable apple varieties for this: Antonovka, Borovinka Stark Erlist and others.

Flowering and fruiting

Desirable is an apple tree, the description of which classifies this variety as medium-fruited. The apple tree of this variety begins to yield in 6-8 years. Flowering begins in the second half of May.

Note! Harvested from late summer to early autumn, as it is a late summer variety. Apples are stored for a long time: from 3 months or more.

Disadvantages of the variety

The main disadvantage of the variety is considered to be a large tree height, which makes harvesting difficult.

Advantages of the variety

The positive varietal qualities include such parameters as:

  • Beautiful appearance of the fruit,
  • High taste characteristics,
  • High resistance to pests and low temperatures.

The Zhelannoye variety is suitable for both amateur gardeners and those who work on a commercial basis, including due to the possibility of long-term storage of products and their excellent taste.
