Those who are just starting to practice gardening should know that a tree, like a sweet cherry, reproduces only through grafting. If someone argues that it is possible to buy a ready-made seedling, you should know that he buys ready-made wood chips in the nursery. For this reason, the question of whether cherries need to be grafted should not be raised. In this case, you should find out exactly how to vaccinate.

When are they vaccinated?

Sweet cherry, like every tree, grows old over the years, dries up, and the time comes to replace it. It is a pity for the gardener to part with his favorite berries, but there is nothing to replace it with. In addition, other situations may arise that cause the tree to die. These are climatic conditions that are not suitable for the cherry, or the tree did not like something in the garden.

Some gardeners are simply looking for another variety, but there are also those who do not lose hope of growing their favorite. In this case, an inoculation will be needed, which will help eliminate two problems at once: the search for a new seedling and the loss of the variety.

Sweet cherry fruit appearance

In addition, thanks to the successfully carried out manipulation, the gardener will receive berries that are much better in taste, larger and that ripen much faster. In addition, the garden needs to be periodically rejuvenated and old trees removed.

Many people remove the tree in the old fashioned way: they cut down the trunk, dig out the roots and plant a new seedling in their place. In this case, you will have to wait several more years for it to grow and begin to bear fruit. This will take a long time, from five to six years. An experienced gardener will do it differently. He will be vaccinated and get the first crop in two or three years.

What is stock and budding

There are two ways to pinch cherries: using a stock or budding. Do not confuse these two concepts, they are completely different processes.

Those who are engaged in gardening know that the tree needs to be grafted in the spring. At this time, sap flow is just beginning, and the vaccine takes root faster. But if you do everything right, then such actions will be successful both in summer and even in autumn.

It is best to vaccinate in March, since it is during this period that the trees wake up and the sap begins to move. There are several ways to vaccinate during this period:

  • into cleavage;
  • bridge;
  • simple copulation;
  • for the bark.

For such procedures, you need to stock up on tools such as a knife or pruner. They are necessary in order to be able to make correct cuts on the scion and rootstock. Only with correct alignment is a successful result of the operation possible. The point is that you need to precisely match the green ball of wood under the young bark.

Scions are harvested during the period when the tree is in hibernation; they need to be stored in the cellar. After the buds begin to swell on the rootstock, it is worth vaccinating. The graft that gets into the heat during vaccination also begins to revive and draw juice from the rootstock. Circulation of juice begins, due to which all connections are tightened and take root.

We plant at an angle

In summer and autumn, you can pinch cherries only with the help of budding. For this, a bud is used, which is cut from the tree along with a small piece of wood.The only difference between such a vaccination is that the clothespin will open only next year, while the stalk on the rootstock comes to life already this year. But, on the other hand, several buddings can be made on one branch, which will significantly increase the chance of successful engraftment. Also, it should be taken into account that the tree itself receives less injuries, and its branches do not need to be cut until the graft takes root.

It should be noted that budding is much better than stock, its advantages should be listed:

  • in this case, the cuttings are not harvested in winter, respectively, there is no need to look for a storage place for them;
  • the operation does not require additional instruments, it is much easier;
  • for two weeks already, you can observe how the scion takes root.

When grafting cherries on cherries

Many people are interested in whether it is possible to graft cherries on cherries? Before proceeding with the procedure, you need to make sure that the tree that will serve as a stock is immune to disease and can withstand the winter. Only then can the operation be started. Otherwise, you need to look for a more resistant tree to which you can pin a cherry stalk.

In the summer, namely in the month of June, you can plant cherries using freshly cut green branches. For this, a method is chosen, which is called copulation. Thanks to this method, the plant grows healthy and adapted to climatic conditions.

First of all, you need to choose a stock that will be convenient for picking fruits and will make it possible to scare away birds. In other words, you need to find a low-growing sweet cherry, which will become a stock. The next step is the correct preparation of the scion, because it will depend on this how productive the new tree will be.

Inoculation of cherries in the summer with young green branches is done following step by step instructions. Cut off young twigs and cuttings from varietal trees that have already borne fruit and have shown how productive they can be.

Important! For the material, you need to choose shoots that are no more than one year old. In addition, they must be sturdy, strong and well developed.

It is best to cut the branches from the south side of the tree, which are constantly illuminated by the sun's rays. The strongest are the shoots that grow on the middle tier of the crown. The length of the cut cherry cutting should be no more than twenty centimeters, on itself - at least four buds. Cut cuttings should be carefully inspected for cracks or other damage.

Copulation in August has some peculiarities. Young twigs are grafted in two ways:

  • on a side cut;
  • by implanting the cutting into the crown.

To make a correct cut on a branch, it is necessary to take into account the fact that the lower part is cut at an angle of forty-five degrees, the length of the cut must correspond to three diameters of the cutting. A cut is also made of the upper part, as a result of which at least a centimeter is left above the upper kidney. During the cut, you need to determine the direction of the future branches of the young cherry. It is taking into account the direction of the kidneys that the sections should be made.

Ways of grafting cherries for the bark

The graft must be attached to the stock, while watching so that the cambial layers are combined. Cambium is the layer under the young bark. Thanks to this layer, new cells of both wood and bark are formed.

The junction of the rootstock and the scion is tied with a special grafting tape or cling film and lubricated with garden varnish. The main thing in this process is that the created structure is firmly connected and does not stagger. This condition should be similar to the connection of fractures in humans. Only correctly folded broken bones and fixed in a motionless state quickly grow together, the same happens in the case of vaccination.

Important! All shoots formed around the stock must be removed in a timely manner.But it should be remembered that you should not completely remove them, since they serve as protection for young kidneys.

Grafting with green cuttings has some peculiarity. On the crown of the tree, it is necessary to select strong, developed branches that are located to the tree trunk at an acute angle of at least forty and no more than sixty degrees. They need to be cut at a distance of forty, or even fifty centimeters from the center of the tree. The sections are smoothed out, and the scion is applied to them. The process is carried out in the same way as in the first case. After that, the junction is wrapped with cling film, grafting tape or ordinary insulating tape. All wounds that were inflicted on the plant during the grafting process must be treated with garden varnish.

Council. Freshly grafted cuttings must be covered with bags made of paper and left in this position for several weeks. Thanks to this, they will not dry out and will quickly take root.

How to plant cherries on cherries in the Moscow region

Sweet cherry is a tree that prefers to grow in regions with warm climates. For a long time, biologists have tried to create varieties to grow in the Moscow region. At the end of the last century, their efforts were crowned with success, and cherries first appeared in the gardens of the Moscow, Bryansk, Oryol regions, as well as in the Moscow region. The most common of them is the Iput variety.

Nature itself contributed to the comfortable growth of this plant. Winter has ceased to be harsh, and summer has become warmer and longer. In addition, cherries became frost-resistant due to the method of reproduction, that is, grafting.

Methods for grafting sweet cherries into cleft

On an old cherry, which has already been adapted to the climatic conditions of central Russia, cuttings are placed throughout the trunk. You can even use grafting material from different varieties of sweet cherries. Thus, you will get an extraordinary tree with multi-colored fruits.

Note.If, in the case of a scion, an already fruitful tree is used, then cuttings are implanted into the trunk or skeletal branches. In most cases, this method is used to inoculate a variety that will serve as a pollinator. In the fall, cuttings are grafted so that they take root until the first frost.

The most successful method of grafting in July is still the bark split or, as gardeners call it, “tongue”. This option is ideal for beginners. There are other similar methods - this is lateral, in the cleft, in the bark. These methods can only be used by experienced gardeners, since you need to be well versed in how to make incisions and in what places. There are many more nuances that need to be considered in these cases.

What else to plant cherries on

Newbies are often interested in what cherries are grafted on? You can color it on other trees, but for success you need to choose only those species that have the same wood structure. In addition, the tree that will serve as a stock must be immune to disease, and it should be able to tolerate winter frosts well. Otherwise, even if the stalk takes root, and the young seedling grows, then the gardener will not wait for the harvest. The most popular vaccinations are:

  1. Most often, cherries are grafted onto a cherry stock. For this, disease-resistant varieties are selected. In addition, the tree should be strong but short. Thus, the new plant will be convenient for harvesting. If the mother branches are not cut, then two crops can be harvested at once. The most important advantage is that in this case the engraftment will be the fastest and most successful. Cherry grafting on cherries is the best choice for beginners;
  2. It is also possible to successfully tint when grafting a stalk on cherry plum. This method has a number of advantages, one of which is the excellent fusion of "mother" and "daughter". In addition, the branches of cherry plum are much stronger than those of cherries, so when fruiting cherries, you can not worry that the branches of the tree may break under the weight of the berries;
  3. Plum is sometimes used as a scion. In this case, the disadvantage is that these two trees do not take root well. But if successful, the gardener will receive an extraordinary combination of fruits.

Bird cherry is also an excellent rootstock for grafting cherries. This tree is strong, practically does not get sick and will be able to withstand a high yield of cherry berries. But as a result of such crossing, an unusual hybrid with seeds, similar to bird cherry, but cherry berries, will turn out.

There are many ways to grow sweet cherries in your garden. The main condition for the process is the fulfillment of all the rules and technology for crossing plants. In the same way, you can achieve improved yields by grafting cherries onto cherries. In this case, the fruits will also be larger and sweeter.
