New types of fruit trees tend to be minimalist, easy to care for. These varieties include the Kovrovoye apple tree, which surprises with its unusual crown shape and good frost resistance.

Breeding history of the variety

Breeders Mazunin N.A., Mazunin N.F., and Putyatin V.I. from the South Ural Research Institute of Horticulture brought out the Kovrovoe apple tree by free pollination. She is one of the varieties of creeping trees. It is based on the club apple variety EliseRathke, which stands out for its famous falling crown. In Russia, the Eliza Ratke variety is known as Vydubetskaya weeping.

The same decorative properties of the mother tree were inherited not only by the dwarf apple tree Carpet, but also by a number of other varieties: Seedling of Dawn, Chudnoe, Snowdrop and others. They were specially bred for growing in the harsh conditions of Siberia and the Urals, so they are all endowed with high frost resistance. But they can adapt to the conditions of regions other than arid ones.

Apple-tree Carpet

Interesting features of the variety

When describing the apple tree Carpet, one cannot fail to mention an important quality - it is self-fertile. For pollination, a dwarf tree needs to have a couple of neighbors, self-fertile trees. A good option would be Land, Snowdrop, Sokolovskoe.

The dwarf apple tree Carpet grows up to 2 meters. The usual height of the tree is 1.2-1.5 m. The bark of the trunk and shoots is brown, oblong large leaves are bright green. The branches of the crown are located horizontally, falling slightly.

Fruiting occurs 3-4 years after planting the seedlings. Yellow-green fruits on a short stalk reach a weight of 170-200 g. When ripe, the glossy skin of apples acquires a scarlet blush.

Important! A planted bonsai is difficult to tolerate drought.

Light-colored sweet and sour pulp is not very juicy. Apple-tree Carpet has an average ripening period, fruits are picked from the end of September. One apple tree can carry up to 60 kg. Apples are stored for up to 2 months. Fruit storage conditions: relative humidity 90-95% at a temperature of 0 ° C. Apple fruits are better preserved in the refrigerator or fruit storage.

How is planted and looked after

The best place to plant an apple tree is well lit by the sun. Soil acidity within pH 5.5-6.5, soil type - loam, well-drained.

A suitable seedling for planting is selected with the following parameters:

  • normally developed root system;
  • young, for better adaptation of the plant to the new soil of the garden plot;
  • taking into account the climatic zone of cultivation.

Note! Planting is carried out in the spring (end of April) or in the fall at the end of September. A month before planting a varietal apple tree, they dig a small hole - 70 × 70 × 60 cm.When several such low-growing trees are planted next to them, a distance of 3-4 m between them is observed.

The top and bottom soil layers are mixed with the following fertilizers:

  • Manure (5 kg);
  • Saltpeter (0.15 kg);
  • Superphosphate (0.25 kg);
  • Wood ash (0.25 kg).

A ⅔ hole is filled with prepared soil mixture and watered. Then a seedling is installed, sprinkled with a layer of fertile soil, slightly compacting it from above. At the end, water again abundantly.

Note! In the first year of care, no special is required, except for regular watering and removing weeds. The next year, they begin to form the crown. For this, the ends of all branches are trimmed. If flowers appear at 2 years of age, they are removed.

The first 5 years the tree requires:

  • protection of the trunk from animals (hares);
  • mulching of the trunk circle with humus;
  • regular watering;
  • double spring spraying against pests and diseases (until the buds swell and before the flowers bloom).

Important! To prevent the branches of a stunted tree from breaking off due to the severity of the snow cover, it is necessary to periodically remove the snow masses.

Diseases and pests

The apple tree is affected by Carpet scab, powdery mildew and tinder fungus. When a tinder fungus outgrowth appears on the trunk, it is cleaned off with a knife and this place is disinfected with copper sulfate. So that the mushroom does not appear in the future, the affected area is painted over with oil paint.

To prevent infection of the tree with powdery mildew and scab, a double spring treatment of the tree with a solution of copper sulfate or a solution of urea is recommended. This procedure is performed in the spring until the buds swell and before the flowers appear.

The Kovrovoe variety is an apple tree with ambiguous characteristics, because it can be grown not only to obtain excellent fruits. It can serve as an extraordinary garden decoration as an ornamental plant. The main thing is that a varietal seedling should be purchased in a good nursery.
