A roll lawn is a turf sown with special grasses and rolled into a roll. But this definition is not entirely accurate, since the composition of the coating has several layers.

How to lay a roll lawn

The lawn is an integral part of any modern garden plot. Summer residents are more and more removed from work on the ground and use their 6 acres for cultural relaxation, but for convenience it is necessary to lay a lawn on the garden plot. Such a coating is laid not only in summer cottages, but also on football fields and city flower beds.

Roll lawn

How to lay a roll lawn with your own hands? This question is asked by a large number of summer residents, because it is quite expensive to pay for the work of professionals, and the coverage itself is not cheap. To lay it yourself, you need to know a few simple rules.

Calculation of the required amount of lawn

It is necessary to correctly calculate the number of rolls that will be needed in order to cover the selected plot of land. To do this, it must be measured and then calculated using the formula S = a * b. Based on the area, you need to calculate the exact amount of coverage, so 1 m² of the site will need 1.25 bays, and 10 m² - 12.5 bays.

Site preparation

Before laying, you need to take care of the correct preparation of the site. To do this, it must be thoroughly cleaned of debris, as well as bushes and trees.

Attention! Trees and bushes must be removed along with the root system, that is, they must be uprooted.

The second stage of work will be the leveling of the site. This means that you need to remove small slopes and holes. If possible, it is necessary to make a slight slope on one of the sides, this will avoid stagnant water, as it will leave, which will prevent the soil from freezing.

Important! The lawn does not tolerate high humidity at all.

Next, you need to prepare the drainage layer. To do this, it is necessary to remove the entire sod layer of soil. At the bottom of the resulting pit, a 15 cm layer of drainage is poured, and then sand, after which everything needs to be tamped well. Sometimes geotextiles are used instead of sand. Then a fertile layer of earth is laid and tamped with a special device - a mini-roller, whose weight is about 120 kg.

Drainage layer

Before spreading the bays, it is necessary to weed the entire garden area by hand or using chemicals. Chemical treatment has one significant drawback - after using the preparations, you must wait at least 14 days, otherwise the chemicals, along with weeds, will destroy the lawn.

How to make your own lawn

The most optimal time for laying is October, since the ground is not frozen yet.

You need to spread the rolls on the side where they are folded. Each roll is carefully rolled in a straight line.

Important! The cover cannot be folded, even if the area is round. All the necessary irregularities are cut out after installation, it is very easy to do this with an ordinary sharp knife.

After laying the first strip, it must be thoroughly tamped with a special tool that you can make yourself from a board and a stick. The gaps between the belts should not exceed 2 cm.

Planting a roll lawn

You cannot move on a freshly laid lawn for about 45 days. This is quite enough for its full germination. Once this period has passed, the coating will be ready for outdoor activities.

Care

After the grass rolls are spread, they must be watered thoroughly. During the survival period, the grass must be watered daily, but in the absence of precipitation. In the future, watering is carried out no more than once every 10 days.

Benefits of a roll lawn

Roll lawn has several advantages:

  • does not require frequent watering;
  • fits quickly;
  • does not require constant weeding.

Errors during styling

In the laying of turf, as in other work, annoying mistakes happen, but they can be prevented:

  • Too thin a layer of lawn has been laid. When buying rolls, you need to carefully look at the thickness of the layer: in one it can be 1 cm, and in the other - 3 cm.
  • After the purchase, the lawn was not laid for too long, as a result of which it does not take root well or turns yellow. Rolls cannot be stored, they must be stacked immediately, as they dry out.
  • Untimely watering the grass. If you do not provide sufficient watering, the lawn will die.

Everyone wants to have a beautiful area that can please the eye, and for this it is best to use lawn grass. Laying it on your own is not so difficult, the main thing is not to rush and adhere to the rules.
