How to lay a rolled lawn on your own so that the grass quickly takes root.

Roll lawn device

Rolled lawns are made up of mesh bases and turf. As a rule, grass in rolls is sold with an area of 0.8 m2. The length of the coating is within 2 m, the width is 40-45 cm, and the thickness is 20-25 mm. The mass of one roll is 15-17 kg. Thanks to the ease, the owner of the site can independently roll out the rolls on the site.

When choosing a lawn covering, it is best to opt for well-known manufacturers who produce quality products. As a rule, cheap analogs of roll lawn are of poor quality, and their service life is minimal.

Rolled lawns are often used for urgent landscaping of a summer cottage. Also, with the help of such landscaping, you can effectively arrange artificial hills in the yard and garden paths, the area near the pools.

Preparing the soil for laying

Laying a lawn with your own hands is a simple process. It is not worth the time and before setting off for the English lawn, you should start preparing the future site. It is necessary to lay an English lawn immediately after purchasing it. If you delay the period a little, the roots of the herbs become weak and may not take root. For even engraftment and obtaining a perfectly flat lawn, you will need to cover all purchased rolls on the same day.

Important! Substrate preparation is considered an important work front, which must be done in advance. Having worked the soil well, you can speed up the process of lawn engraftment.

Do-it-yourself preparation of the land for laying a roll lawn is carried out in stages:

  • Clearing the area where it is planned to lay rolls and digging up soil. The topsoil is cleared of debris and weeds. During digging, the weed root system is removed. It is very important to carefully approach this stage of work, as weeds can break through the lawn and spoil the appearance of the green area. Removing the weed from the roll will be very problematic.
  • Creation of drainage systems. Lawn grass does not need strong soil moisture. It is for this reason that it is important to equip drainage on a low-lying area and soil with a high level of clay content. To do this, the fertile soil layer is cut to a depth of 35-38 cm and taken out in a wheelbarrow several meters from the proposed lawn area. The resulting foundation pit should be covered with a pillow consisting of sand and gravel. You will need 10-12 cm of gravel and the same amount of sand. If desired, the sand can be replaced with geotextiles. Having tamped the site, you can bring back the removed soil layer and scatter it flush with the overall height of the entire site. For convenience, you can pull the twine. To do this, pegs are driven in in the corner parts of the site and ropes are pulled on them along the height of the ground surface.By adding a pillow, in this way, you can clearly see where you need to remove the lines of a layer of earth, and where to add.
  • A fertilizer intended for lawn grass is scattered over the soil. The platform should be well tamped using a homemade roller or wide plank with a flat surface. In order to check the quality of soil compaction, you need to step on the ground with your foot. If it crumples from the leg, then the tamping was bad.

Roll Lawn Laying Rules

Laying the lawn in rolls with your own hands does not require special skills. Experts recommend laying roll grass in April or at the end of September. During this period, the soil still contains moisture, and the air temperature does not exceed 20 ° C.

Roll lawn should be laid step by step and competently:

  • Rolls should be stacked starting from the area where they were folded after purchase to minimize the amount of carryover that causes soil to crumble and the root system to collapse.
  • The roll is placed in the corner of the platform and unwound in a straight line. It is very important to lay the roll as flat as possible, considering that it will be at the end of the lawn.

Important! It is unacceptable to twist, twist and bend the grass in the process of covering the soil. This is always shown in the lawn installation instructions.

  • In the case when obstacles in the form of fountains, flower beds or garden figures are encountered on the way of the rolled lawn, you can roll it further. Excess grass is then removed with a knife.
  • The adjacent rows must be laid in such a way that the brickwork technology is respected. It is unacceptable that the butt parts of the rows coincide. It is advisable to make the butt part of the next row fall in the middle of the roll of the previous row. In this case, the grass will take root evenly. Each row should fit snugly against the other.
  • Under no circumstances should overlaps or gaps of more than 1 cm between the grass cover be allowed when covering the bales. As a rule, the outermost part of the roll takes root the worst. According to the recommended scheme, it is unacceptable to lay cut pieces of lawn together with long rolls. It will be correct to put the trim in the center of the lawn. The edges of the plot should be greened with long coverings, which is especially important when several hundred square meters are landscaped at once. Once the first row has been laid out, it is recommended to crush it a little, using a wide board with a smooth surface. Then you need to smooth the grass with your palm, which will make it possible to feel all the pits and bumps. If such are found, you should raise a piece of grass and add a layer of soil or remove excess soil. After the flatness of the area has been re-checked, the tamping can be repeated. As soon as the first row has been rolled in, wooden boards are laid out on it and the next roll is covered in such a way that the paver stands on the boardwalk. This allows you to additionally compact the grass cover and avoid it being pushed by your feet.

Growing

Growing a roll lawn is easy enough. You will need to systematically water the grass that has been planted and apply top dressing. Special top dressing for lawn grass should be applied every 20-30 days until the end of August. The lawn should be mowed when the grass reaches 5-6 cm in height and the turf looks overgrown with a strong root system.

Important! If you need to roll up the roll, you should use a special mesh.

The main problems with self-laying roll lawn

Quite often, inexperienced summer residents make mistakes when self-laying grass in rolls. The most common mistakes include:

  • Insufficient compaction of the grass after planting, which leads to uneven drying of the green mass.
  • Partial removal of the root system of weeds leads to the fact that the creeping buttercup, wheatgrass and bluegrass begin to sprout through the uniform lawn greens.

A roll lawn is a great way to quickly green a large area. However, he also needs proper care. Otherwise, the grass will begin to dry out or rot and there will be no trace of a beautiful lawn near the house.
